The journal covers a wide range of aspects related to design and supports discourse across multiple domains of application, including architectural design, ceramic design, communication design, critical and speculative design, design for artificial intelligence, digital and computational design, engineering design, fashion design, graphic design, industrial design, interaction design, jewellery design, landscape design, lifestyle design, packaging design, product design, service design, social innovation design, sustainable design, systems design, urban design, user experience design, etc.
Article types
All submissions fall under the Full Paper category and should not exceed 12 pages (including images and references). The recommended word count is 4000–8000 words, depending on the nature of the submission.
The Integrated Design Research (IDR) Journal accepts a range of full paper submissions that reflect diverse approaches to design research, practice, and inquiry.
Research Articles
Original design research across theoretical, empirical, or methodological inquiry
Clear research question, strong conceptual grounding, engagement with literature, and contribution to advancing design knowledge
Case Study Articles
In-depth analysis of specific design projects, contexts, or practices
Critical reflection on processes, decisions, and outcomes, supported by relevant theory and contextual insight
Review Articles
Critical synthesis of existing literature within a defined area
Identification of key debates, gaps, and future directions; contribution to theory, methods, or emerging areas
Practice Led and Design Inquiry Articles
Research through design, making, and experimentation
Clear articulation of research contribution through practice, including methods, processes, and insights; visual/process documentation encouraged
Design Perspectives
Critical viewpoints, reflections, or dialogues on design issues and directions
Strong argument or position, engagement with contemporary discourse, and relevance across design contexts
