Keynote Speaker - IDR 2026

Ann Bessemans | Typographic Designer, Legibility Researcher, Educator Founder, READSEARCH | Professor, LUCA School of Arts / KU Leuven

Ann Bessemans is an internationally renowned expert in typographic readability research. Through her practice as a designer-researcher and graphic designer, she demonstrates a profound passion for all functional aspects of typography in its many forms, ranging from letterpress printing to cutting-edge technologies. This passion forms a constant thread in the DNA of READSEARCH.be (est. 2015), the research team founded by Ann. Within READSEARCH, the relationship between typography, legibility and illegibility, reading, and perception is investigated.

Ann’s PhD project, “Type Design for Children with a Visual Impairment” (2012), supervised by renowned type designer Gerard Unger, laid the foundation for a scientifically and academically driven approach to her design and research practice. Her work is characterized by a systematic, data-driven methodology in which research is grounded in the needs of specific reader groups and diverse reading practices. The results provide type designers, typographers, and graphic designers with new foundations and inspiration for more targeted and informed design decisions.

At the heart of Ann’s thinking lies the conviction that design is never neutral, and that designers therefore bear a responsibility toward those for whom, or that for which, they design. She views graphic design not merely as a professional practice, but as a research discipline in which evidence and intuition are not opposites but mutually enriching sources of creative possibility. Her research has been recognized on multiple occasions by Microsoft Advanced Reading Technologies (USA) and has found its way into educational materials published by Van In, as well as into the widely used children’s book series Fox and Hare (Vos en Haas).

Ann her main activity (100%) is at LUCA School of Arts Ghent and KU Leuven University and is still associated (20%) with the previous institution being PXL and Hasselt Univerity. She is affiliated with the Data Science Institute at Hasselt University, serves on the Scientific Council of the Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library, is a member of the Educational Committee of the Plantin Institute of Typography, and is part of the Board of Directors of ATypI. She is an internationally sought-after speaker and workshop leader, and works independently as a graphic designer and legibility consultant.

Vision Speaker

Ishan Khosla | Type and Graphic Designer, Visual Artist, Educator, Researcher Founder-Director, The Typecraft Initiative

Ishan Khosla (b. Fort Kochi, 1976) is a visual artist, designer, researcher, and educator based in Dehradun, India. A TED speaker, and a Type Directors Club winner, he holds an MFA in Design from the School of Visual Arts, New York. His work is about exploring the margins of art, craft and design. It addresses the overlooked, the unseen and marginalized voices of the Global South—both in urban or rural spaces. His interest is in exploring street and vernacular culture and the ways people navigate and inhabit these spaces.

Ishan was on the working group of Don Norman’s Future of Pluriversal Design Education (2023–24), and has written the curriculum for Craft Communications program (IICD, Jaipur). His MFA thesis on design education in India (DESI) 2004–05, also underscore his commitment to South Asian design pedagogy.

In 2011, Ishan founded The Typecraft Initiative, a platform that collaborates with craftspeople, indigenous artists, refugees, women, and religious minorities to co-create digital typefaces rooted in traditional art forms such as tattoos, embroideries, and motifs. These typefaces are not only tools for communication but also living archives—bridging ancient practices with contemporary design and digital technology. Typecraft reframes type design from its colonial, patriarchal and minimalist roots to one that celebrates complexity, humanism and indigenous knowledge.

Through Typecraft, Ishan addresses broader themes of cultural preservation, sustainability, equity, and the politics of representation. His work has been exhibited internationally—including at the Venice Biennale, London Design Biennial, Ginza Graphic Gallery (Tokyo), Atelier Muji (Tokyo), and RMIT Gallery (Melbourne)—and is part of several public museum and private collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), Letterpress Archive (USA), Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (Japan), The Munjal Foundation (Serendipity Art Festival), Devi Art Foundation, and the Powerhouse Museum (Australia).

Alongside his practice, Ishan writes, lectures, and teaches widely, sharing his insights on design, craft, and culture at global forums such as ATypI (2020, 2026), College Art Association (CAA), CIHA, the AIGA Design Conference, and Semi-Permanent. He has lectured at various institutions such as Japan Foundation (Tokyo), Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, University of Edinburgh, Alto University, Gyeonggi Biennale, SVA (NY), California College of Art, College Art Association, the Powerhouse Museum (Sydney) among others.

His published work in books and journals that address everything from an indigenous tattoo based typeface (Marg magazine, December, 2024), to the socio-political analysis of brooms (in Field of Brooms [Christan Verlag] and his own works on ecology where animals are addressed (in The Politics of Global Craft [Bloomsbury]

Ishan sees design as a tool for transformation—one that can amplify marginalized voices, preserve endangered traditions, and inspire new creative possibilities for bringing communities together worldwide in an ever divisive world.

About IDR

Integrated Design Research (IDR) is the research platform of the Department of Integrated Design at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. It serves as a space for advancing design knowledge through collaboration across design research, education, practice, and industry.

IDR seeks to foster critical inquiry, innovation, and dialogue on design as a global and culturally situated practice. While it highlights design in Asia, vernacular practices, and contributions from regional design subcultures, IDR welcomes scholarship from diverse cultural, disciplinary, and geographical contexts. The journal and conference encourage submissions that explore design as a catalyst for creative economies, social transformation, and technological innovation.

Through a strong emphasis on theory, methods, and practice-based research, IDR aims to expand the discourse on design science, design thinking, and interdisciplinary knowledge creation. Its mission is to contribute to both local and global conversations on design, bridging academic research with professional practice to advance the field.

IDR provides two primary publishing avenues:

IDR Conference: an annual double-blind peer-reviewed conference held since 2022. The conference proceedings are published with ISSN 3021-694X and eISSN 3021-6958.

IDR Journal: a biannual double-blind peer-reviewed journal established in 2024, published with ISSN 3030-7139 and eISSN 3030-7147.

  • Issue 01 accepts submissions from January to March and is published in June.

  • Issue 02 accepts submissions from April to June via the IDR Annual Conference (held in November) and is published in December.

Selected papers from the conference will be published in this issue, while—with the authors’ consent—some papers may be scheduled for publication in Issue 01 of the following year.

For more information, visit the Submit page. All publications, including conference proceedings and the IDR Journal, are accessible via the website.

Aim & Scope

Integrated Design Research (IDR) is dedicated to advancing knowledge and critical discourse in design by fostering dialogue between research, education, practice, and industry. It aims to highlight the cultural, social, and technological dimensions of design while embracing diverse perspectives from across the globe.

IDR particularly values scholarship that explores vernacular practices, regional design cultures, and contributions from design subcultures, while remaining open to research that engages with broader international and cross-cultural contexts. The journal and conference welcome original theoretical, empirical, and practice-based studies that address contemporary challenges and opportunities in design.

The scope of IDR encompasses, but is not limited to, the following thematic areas:
